Dour thocht

A Scottish landscape with rugged hills, sparse vegetation, and a moody overcast sky. In the distance, there is a subtle glow from a soft beam of light

These pages are a collection of my occasional thoughts, partly structured to appear slightly less rambling. Although many of the topics and opinions may appear negative, I am personally a relatively happy and optimistic person. That is why I have chosen the title ” Dour Thocht”. The word “dour” is a great Scottish word which on the surface seems to be dark and pessimistic, however, when you apply it to people, the layers are more subtle with a more reasoned aspect.

Below is an extract from an article in the Scotsman which sheds more light onto the nuances of the word.
Someone who is described as dour may be perceived as lacking a sense of humour, but to many Scots this isn’t the case. Being dour can also refer to that dry, cynical sense of humour inherent in many Scots, such as when colleagues sarcastically rib you for being too happy when you come into work. – The Scotsman

Thocht:
Frae Wikipedia
Thocht can refer tae the ideas or arrangements o ideas that result frae thinkin, the act o producin thochts, or the process o producin thochts.

I have no real writing experience but decided to do this for myself. I realise that I have so many thoughts and opinions and that these change over time. Which is a perfectly normal thing. For a few years I have been sporadically writing down things thoughts, feelings, opinions. There have been certain recurring themes but no overall structure. I read many newsletters and blog type articles and realise that many people just write stuff. And that is okay. So I’m documenting some of my thocht on here partly to give some discipline (or to see if I can keep the discipline) partly as a continuing therapeutic process and partly for reasons unknown. Dhu it. Rather than just Think it.
